ϲͼ is making it more accessible for middle- and high-school students who play woodwind, brass or percussion instruments to further develop their music skills this summer. The University is launching its first-ever summer band camps this June for a more competitive price than other band camps in the area.

The camp is priced at $375 a student, which includes four days of camp with three nights of overnight accommodation on campus and meals; and pricing is flexible for commuting students or those who want to bring their own food.

Students also do not need to audition for the camp, allowing for students of all backgrounds and levels to receive collegiate-level training to grow their skills. The only requirement is to be recommended by their school’s band director.

Dr. Thomas Willmann, visiting professor and director of instrumental activities, conducting and music education, said that the camp is designed to be a fun, flexible educational experience to give students the chance to play over the summer.

“When students do our camps, it’s a completely different experience than what they get in their schools. They’re getting instruction from college professors and a guest conductor who is a role model for all,” Willmann said. “They get to hear different conductors share their perspectives and interpretations, and how to approach music. It enhances the student’s skills and understanding of playing in an ensemble.”

The camp will help students branch out into different styles of music and be exposed to learning music from a diverse group of composers. Willmann said he’s especially jazzed about that magical moment when the first note rings out, kicking off an epic musical adventure for everyone involved.

“That’s a very fun second because everybody’s focused and intense, and it usually ends up being such a cool moment when all the students look around and think ‘oh, this sounds cool,’” he said.

On the Friday of each camp, the students will show off their skills with a performance for family, friends and the Texas Wesleyan community.
However, the camp experience transcends musical instruction. In addition to honing their craft, participants forge lasting friendships and connections, creating cherished memories that resonate far beyond the rehearsal room.

"Anybody that's gone to a band camp always comes away with stories of the music and the and the experience — which is great — but then they also come away with friends,” Willmann said. “You start to grow a passion for music, and the friendships you get along the way are a huge bonus.”

Willmann’s own band camp experiences are what inspired him to bring the camps to Texas Wesleyan. He believes young student musicians should have the opportunity to create connections and develop skills in a fun, creative environment.

“I think it’s the role of the college to offer these experiences, for those who have the resources. It helps build a community and builds trust and relationships with the middle and high schools,” he said. “It also shows the students that are looking at colleges some different places and options. There’s a lot that Texas Wesleyan can offer, and this is a great way to show off our facilities, our faculty and our scholarships.”

These unique camps foster a collaborative environment where young musicians can learn from college-level instructors, forge lasting friendships and discover a deeper passion for music. Don't miss this opportunity for your student to be a part of something special!
